In 2006 the Frenchman scored 11 podiums in 14 races including an impressive 7 race victories. Bourdais racing the Lola B02/00 Ford for Newman Haas racing won the title by 85 points over British driver Justin Wilson although American AJ Almendinger will be remembered as his closest rival that season winning 5 races after being fired twice by two different teams.
The Vanderbilt cup has a long history in American racing having first being held in 1904.
