2002 Tony Pedregon Race Used Prototype Simpson Nitro NHRA Funny Car Helmet
This incredible looking prototype helmet was produced by Simpson Racing Products for a regular user of Simpson helmets and two-time NHRA Funny Car champion Tony Pedregon, to test and evaluate this design for the company. We were informed that Simpson presented the helmet to Pedregon to try at the 2002 O’Reilly NHRA Spring Nationals held at the Houston Raceway Park dragstrip in Baytown, Texas. Pedregon used the helmet in qualifying rounds at the event and gave his analysis and the helmet back to the Simpson representatives for further development. Pedregon would wear an updated version of this helmet on his way to winning the 2003 Nitro Funny Car Championship.
The plain black helmet has the look of an ‘Alien’ helmet and is based on the companies Desperado helmet designs. It is unusual for a ‘Nitro’ helmet, as unlike most it has an internal filtering system, where most nitro helmets have external cheek filters. The helmet is still fitted with all of its breathing systems including its external feed pipe. It also has its internal eye slit balaclava with an extra-long neck protection skirt to the base of the helmet. Around the eye-port is a special sealing strip to stop the nitric acid gasses from entering the helmet. It has period Hans clips and straps and all safety stickers still attached.
The helmet will be accompanied by a full Certificate of Authenticity.
This prototype space-age looking helmet would be a great addition to any helmet collection.
