Tony Bettenhausen Jr. was both an accomplished IndyCar driver and team owner, and in the latter role he fielded cars for Stefan Johansson, Helio Castroneves and Patrick Carpentier, among others.

Bettenhausen was part of the famous racing family from Tinley Park, Ill. Starting with the family patriarch of the same name, the four Bettenhausens who competed in the Indianapolis 500 combined for the most starts without a victory (46).

Bettenhausen competed in 11 of the 500s, finishing seventh as a rookie in 1981. He created Bettenhausen Motorsports in 1985. His driving career included 33 NASCAR Cup Series starts, highlighted by a seventh-place finish at Richmond in 1974.

Bettenhausen and his wife, Shirley, the daughter of IndyCar driver Jim McElreath, died in a light plane crash in Kentucky in 2000.
