1985 Damon Hill Race Used Arai GP-N Formula Ford 1600 Helmet
This very rare helmet was Damon Hill’s very first Arai helmet and possibly his first ever car racing helmet. In the early 80’s Hill raced Motorcycles until his Mother convinced him to try 4 wheel racing. Hill can be seen wearing this rare Arai GP-N helmet while driving a Van Diemen for Manadient Racing during the 1985 Formula Ford Festival at the legendary Brands Hatch Circuit.
He graduated through British Formula Ford, winning six races driving a Van Diemen for Manadient Racing in 1985, his first full season in cars, and finishing third and fifth in the two UK national championships. He also took third place in the final of the above-mentioned 1985 Formula Ford Festival, helping the his country win the team prize. The podiums he earned that year were the first of many for the future Formula 1 World Champion.
He used the same simple, easily identifiable helmet design as his father: eight white oar blades arranged vertically around the upper surface of a dark blue helmet. The device and colours represent the London Rowing Club for which Graham Hill rowed in the early 1950s.
Hill had a successful F1 career racing from 1992-99 for Brabham, Williams, Arrows and the Jordan F1 team. He collected 22 wins and 42 podiums during this time and was mostly remembered for his intense rivalry with Michael Schumacher. In 1996 he finally reached his dream and became World Champion.
