1973/74 Mike Mosley Personally Worn Leader Card Racers Indy 500 Jacket
Mike Mosley is one of those drivers that stands out during an era of Indy car racing that people remember so fondly. He won five races in a career that spanned from 1967-1983, and he was always one of the best drivers at the historic Milwaukee Mile, where he won three times.
Mosley might be even better known had he driven for one of the sport’s larger teams. He had a unique but smooth driving style and was always on the charge, and the latter was never more on display than the 1981 race at Milwaukee. On that early June day, Mosley started on the last row (25th) and deftly drove to the front, leading 45 of the 150 laps. As further proof of his dominance, he finished as the only car on the lead lap!
Mosley was often among the favorites to win the Indianapolis 500, although he only finished one of his 15 starts there. In that 1979 race, he finished third. He started on the front row in his final two attempts. Many experts put him in that group of greatest drivers to never win the 500, a group that includes Dan Gurney, whom Mosley drove for late in his career. In fact, Mosley’s ’81 win at Milwaukee not only was the last victory in CART for a normally aspirated engine, it was the last of the Gurney Eagles to win a race.
Much of Mosley’s time was spent with the famed Leader Card Racers. The team led by Bob and Ralph Wilke had a racing heritage spanning over 70 years and included four generations of participants. In the late 1930s, Bob Wilke was the Midwest distributor for Offenhauser engines and the popular Kurtis Kraft midgets. The team won the Indianapolis 500 on three occasions — twice with Rodger Ward and another with Bobby Unser.
The fantastic jacket offered here was owned and worn by Mosley during the 1973 and ’74 seasons with Leader Card. The patches of the team and Goodyear are original and marvelous against the jacket’s fantastic blue, and the yellow stripe down the side is particularly striking. Mosley’s name is embroidered on the chest. This jacket is a small.
