Any race fan knows the significance of the calendar turning to May and the importance for the IndyCar Series.

Yes, Indianapolis Motor Speedway will soon be open for business!

The action begins with this weekend’s road course race, the GMR Grand Prix, which Colton Herta won for Andretti Autosport last year. Team Penske has been excellent in IMS road races over the years, so look for Will Power, Josef Newgarden and Scott McLaughlin to be factors.

Then, on May 16, practice begins for the 107th Indianapolis 500. Marcus Ericsson will be the defending champion, but any of his Chip Ganassi Racing teammates — Scott Dixon, Alex Palou and Takuma Sato — could win. Dixon and Sato (twice) also are former 500 winners at Indy.

Joining Dixon, Sato, Ericsson and Power as former “500” winners in the field will be Tony Kanaan and Alexander Rossi of Arrow McLaren, Ryan Hunter-Reay of Dreyer & Reinbold Racing and Helio Castroneves and Simon Pagenaud of Meyer Shank Racing.

The race is Sunday, May 28 on NBC.
