F1, INDYCAR STARS GET SEASONS OFF TO STRONG START
Max Verstappen and Marcus Ericsson were the first-race winners last weekend as Formula One and IndyCar got their respective 2023 seasons rolling.
Verstappen led a 1-2 charge by Red Bull Racing at the Bahrain International Circuit, with Fernando Alonso giving Aston Martin hope for the season ahead.
In St. Petersburg, Fla., Ericsson moved past Pato O’Ward with three-plus laps to go in the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg to score his first IndyCar Series victory since last year’s Indianapolis 500.
Those aren’t the only drivers who have to be eager for the second race of the season. In F1, Sergio Perez’s second-place finish was a bright spot, and Carlos Sainz and Lewis Hamilton rounded out the top five. Lance Stroll was sixth.
In IndyCar, O’Ward settled for a “disappointing” second-place finish with Scott Dixon completing the podium. Alexander Rossi was fourth in his debut with Arrow McLaren Racing while Callum Ilott’s second season in the series produced the first top-five finish for Juncos Hollinger Racing, which has expanded to two full-time cars.
